Why no course will help you with AI unless you understand something older than the internet.

You know the feeling: you open LinkedIn, and every other post is about artificial intelligence. Someone automated an entire sales process. Someone else built an app in an afternoon that used to take a team of developers six months. And you're sitting at your screen feeling like you've missed the train. Maybe several trains already. That feeling has a name most of us don't like to admit: paralysis.

It's not just about not knowing which tool to use — it's something deeper. The feeling that it's already too late to start, that everyone else is hopelessly far ahead, that the world has changed so much that your existing experience has lost its value. This article isn't about what prompt to type into ChatGPT. It's about something more important: the fact that the way people learn new things hasn't changed in thousands of years. And that's exactly where your biggest opportunity lies.

Every big change looks like the end of the world

When the first printed books started spreading across Europe in the fifteenth century, many scribes and monks who had until then copied texts by hand experienced existential dread. Their craft, which had defined their entire lives, suddenly looked pointless. And yet those who understood the essence of their work — not the mechanics of copying, but the ability to understand a text, organize ideas, and pass on knowledge — became the first editors, publishers, and curators of knowledge in the new world.

The same pattern played out with every technological shift since: the Industrial Revolution, electricity, the internet. Every time, the same pattern emerged: a wave of panic, then a period of confusion, and finally the realization that the people who succeeded weren't necessarily the fastest to adopt the new technology. They were the ones who understood how people learn and adapt.

Today, we're in the same situation: AI is changing the rules of the game. But not the deep ones — the ones that determine who succeeds in the new game. Paradoxically, the faster technology changes, the more important the slow, timeless principles of learning and adaptation become. Because tools come and go. But the ability to learn, observe, and adapt stays.

Unconscious competence: why your experience hasn't disappeared

One truth runs through the entire history of human learning: people live far below their potential. Not because they lack talent, but because they've grown comfortable and stopped exposing themselves to things that force them to grow. Psychologist William James described this back at the turn of the twentieth century: “People live far below their ceiling. They possess abilities they never put to use.”

What pulls you out of that paralysis? James answers clearly: either an extraordinary emotional stimulus, or the necessity to act. Excitement, ideas, and effort — those are the things that move us forward. And that's exactly the moment you're in right now. AI isn't a threat to your existing know-how. AI is the stimulus that can push you to activate abilities you've let sit idle inside you for years.

Three timeless rules that still work today

Look at the lives of people who achieved genuine mastery — whether Leonardo da Vinci, Darwin, Marie Curie, or John Coltrane — and you'll find surprisingly similar patterns. Three principles that hold true today just as they did centuries ago.

1. Reclaim the role of the apprentice

Leonardo da Vinci spent twelve years in Andrea del Verrocchio's workshop. Not as a brilliant artist, but as an apprentice. He ground pigments, prepared surfaces, and watched the master work. Only after years of this humble practice did he begin creating his own work. John Coltrane practiced every day so intensely that his lip would bleed. Between the ages of five and seven, Mozart trained his musical memory through improvisation at the keyboard. What looked like innate talent was, in reality, years of structured practice.

What's the takeaway? If you've spent twenty years leading teams, running projects, or building a company, you have an enormous reserve of experience and context. AI doesn't take that experience away from you. But it does ask you to step back into the role of an apprentice for a while — to accept that, with this new tool, you're a beginner. And that's okay. Being an apprentice isn't a humiliation. It's the fastest path to new mastery.

Research shows that elite athletes fall during training more often than average ones. Why? Because they attempt jumps they haven't mastered yet. If they were afraid of falling, they'd never learn anything new. The same goes for AI. Every failed prompt, every unusable output, is training. Not failure.

2. Observe before you act

Economist and complexity theorist W. Brian Arthur summed it up like this: “You observe. And observe. And observe. You try to see reality as it actually is. You realize the game keeps changing, and it's up to you to understand the current rules. You stop being naive. You stop clinging to outdated theories. You simply observe. And wherever you can take an effective step, you take it.”

In the context of AI, this means: you don't have to automate your entire company tomorrow. It's enough to start observing. How does AI actually work? What can it do, and what can't it? Where are the limits? Where does it add value, and where does it just generate an illusion of productivity? The best strategy isn't to blindly chase every new tool. It's systematic observation, building your own understanding, and then taking a precise, informed step. The people who look like “AI gurus” today mostly didn't start any differently. They started with curious observation.

3. Let curiosity guide you, not fear

Newton said he arrived at the law of gravity by thinking about it constantly. Darwin credited his success to the ability to reflect on a single problem for years on end. Einstein claimed that curiosity, determination, and hard work were the key ingredients of his effectiveness. Across every master, from scientists to artists, you find one shared trait: intense curiosity and devotion to their own subject.

Fear of AI is understandable. But fear is a bad advisor. The people who learn to work best with AI won't be the ones who took the most courses. They'll be the ones who approached it with curiosity — like Marie Curie, who, after years of uncertainty, felt chemistry calling to her like a “secret order,” and never stopped again. Henry Ford worked on a new engine every evening and every Saturday, and said of it: “I cannot say that it was hard work. Work that interests you is never hard.”

Find the thing about AI that genuinely interests you. Not what “you should know.” Once you find your own reason, your own motivation, AI stops being a threat and becomes your playground.

Your brain is ready. The rest is just a decision.

Neuroscience over recent decades has clearly shown that the human brain is remarkably plastic, not just in childhood, but throughout life. Our activities, interests, and habits literally shape the physical structure of our brains. Studies have shown that as little as five to six hours of practice with a new skill is enough for the brain to start forming lasting neural pathways. You're not too old. You're not too far behind. Your brain is waiting for the stimulus.

And this is where we get to the heart of the matter. The paralysis you feel isn't proof of your incompetence. It's proof that you're standing on the threshold of something new. And your brain knows it. Every master has gone through a moment of feeling lost, incompetent, overwhelmed by the scope of what they didn't know. Bertrand Russell wrote about this openly: every new major task triggered anxiety in him, a feeling that he'd never manage it. And yet, every time, after a period of intense concentration, the solution simply “sprouted” on its own.

That's exactly the mechanism that also works with AI. You don't have to understand everything right away. It's enough to immerse yourself in one problem, one use case, one question, and let your brain do the work. It already knows how. It's been doing it your whole life.

In practice: three steps to get moving

1. Accept the beginner's discomfort. Open any AI tool and start asking it something. What you ask doesn't matter. What matters is breaking through the barrier of the first step. Remember, da Vinci didn't start with the Mona Lisa either. He started by grinding pigments.

2. Find a mentor or a guide. Not a hundred-hour video course, but a real person who's just a step ahead of you. An old Chinese proverb says: “When the mind is ready, a teacher will appear.” In the age of AI, that's truer than ever.

3. Connect AI to your domain. Your twenty years of experience managing people, in sales, in finance — that's exactly the “older layer of learning” that gives a new tool meaning and power. AI without domain knowledge is just a text generator. AI in the hands of an experienced professional is a multiplier. And you are that multiplier — with your context, your intuition, and your ability to tell what matters from what doesn't. That's something no twenty-year-old “AI native” has. And won't have for a long time yet.

The world has changed. You haven't.

AI hasn't changed any of that. It's only changed the tool you work with. The rules of the game stay the same. And the most important one is: start. Not tomorrow. Not “once you're ready.” Now. Because, as Nietzsche put it: whoever learns grants themselves talent. And the only thing standing in the way is pride, and the fear of looking like a beginner for a while.

Next time you open LinkedIn and feel that anxiety about the train leaving without you, try to remember that everyone who looks today like they have AI mastered was, a year or two ago, exactly where you are right now. The difference between them and you isn't talent, age, or technical education. It's simply the decision to start. And then another. And then another. Like da Vinci in the workshop. Like Coltrane with his saxophone. Like Darwin aboard the Beagle.
